Florence Unified School District Budgetary Steering Committee Meeting Minutes
The committee discussed financial reduction strategies to address a $5-7.5 million budgetary gap, focusing on two main levers: a potential four-day school week and school closures. Financial modeling was presented for the four-day school week, highlighting the volatility of savings depending on enrollment, food-service revenue, and operational cuts, noting that conservative or moderate implementations might actually result in net losses. Staff survey results regarding the four-day week were reviewed, showing a significant divide between certified staff, who largely support the change, and classified staff, who express concerns regarding potential loss of hours and benefits. Additionally, a school closure sub-committee presented an informational packet on potential site consolidations, emphasizing that while savings were identified, operational planning regarding specific facility closures remains pending. The committee highlighted the tension between maintaining product quality, protecting staff hours, and achieving fiscal targets.
